The Question of Missing County Tax Money
The Herald calls on the county commissioners to account for over $6,000 in missing tax funds allegedly held back by former county attorneys.
The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
One of the most interesting pieces of local literature ever published in Chehalis County is a report on delinquent tax collections. The gross amount collected by ex-County Attorney J. C. Pearson and County Attorney Geo. D. Schofield was $19,833.21. Does the taxpayer want to know how much of that the county got? Just $13,540.21. We do not believe, if the courts are called to pass upon the question, the county attorney will be allowed to retain $6,105 out of $7,700 collected. His salary is all that he is entitled to. The county commissioners must act and act promptly. If they have not got the backbone to act, they must find backbone. If they need backbone let them inquire of the people.
“If they need backbone let them inquire of the people. There they will find enough to put an additional ridge upon the Olympic mountains, and have some leftover.”
Financial oversight and the potential for public corruption by legal officials remains a core issue in local governance. This historical demand for transparency reflects the ongoing fight for the integrity of public funds in Grays Harbor County.
