Monroe Doctrine Debated in Hover

The Kennewick debating team bested their Hover counterparts during a contest held at the local church, with a focus on the relevance of the Monroe Doctrine.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

The Hover debating team, composed of Misses Pearl Evans, Zilda and Ruth Toothaker, debated for the first time this year with the Kennewick team in the church at Hover last Friday evening. The question was: 'Resolved, that the Monroe Doctrine should be discontinued.' Miss Hayes, of Pasco, who is coaching the Pasco debating team, was chosen a judge. The decision was a close one, but Kennewick won. Nevertheless we are very proud of our team and their work and feel sure they will prove their worth in the other two debates of the season. After the debate the Kennewick team and the Hover young people were entertained at the school house by the high school girls.

“Resolved, that the Monroe Doctrine should be discontinued.”

In 1916, high school students debated international policy as a core civic exercise. It serves as a reminder of how deeply international affairs and academic debate were integrated into the social fabric of rural Washington communities.
