Fatal Accident at Hoquiam Mill

A sawmill worker is killed in a tragic workplace accident, leaving behind an invalid widow.

John Sandstone, while working in the Hoquiam Mill Co.'s mill on Tuesday, was struck by a cant-hook and died from the effects of his injuries in twenty minutes. He leaves an invalid wife, who has been under treatment at the hospital in this city several times during the past summer, but no children. His body was interred in the Wishkah cemetery on Wednesday.

Sawmill labor was notoriously dangerous, and the lack of a social safety net meant that the sudden death of a primary earner frequently led to total destitution for the remaining spouse.
