The Territorry's Tally
Secretary H. G. Struve releases the official vote count for the recent general election in Washington Territory.
The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
The following is the result of the official count of the vote cast at the last general election in Washington Territory, as made by Hon. H. G. Struve, Secretary of the Territory: For Delegate, Orange Jacobs received 5,079 votes and J. P. Judson received 4,841, giving Jacobs a majority of 238. For Constitutional Convention, 4,055 voted in favor and 1,530 against, a majority of 2,525. The results also detail the various district candidates for the Territorial Council and House of Representatives. In the Council, there are 6 Republicans and 4 Democrats, while in the House there are 16 Republicans and 15 Democrats. There being a tie in Clallam and San Juan counties, a new election will have to be held.
“There being a tie in Clallam and San Juan counties, a new election will have to be held.”
In 1876, the path to statehood was the central debate in Washington. Today, we still see these territorial tensions manifest in the way our municipal districts are partitioned and the fierce, localized competition for legislative seats.
