Fire Consumes Grand Forks Property

A blaze up the Wishkah River destroys a barn and two homes just as a real estate deal was nearing completion.

A fire at Grand Forks, up the Wishkah River, occurred Monday night, destroying two dwelling houses and a barn belonging to Mr. Hill. The loss, as near as we can learn, is $1,200, partially insured. Mr. Hill had just bargained for the sale of his place to some eastern parties that day and was intending to go to Montesano Tuesday to close the deal.

The sudden loss of a property just as it was being sold highlights the vulnerability of early settlers' assets. Fire risk remains a constant, documented anxiety in historical accounts of the densely wooded Grays Harbor region.
