The Editor Who Walked 15,000 Miles to Save the Snohomish Star

While most men stayed home for Christmas, Mr. Eldridge Morse crisscrossed Washington and Oregon on a grueling tour that has turned his struggling weekly paper into a regional powerhouse.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

We had a call this week from Mr. Eldridge Morse, editor of the 'Snohomish Star,' published at Snohomish City. Our paper is not yet old, but has obtained a circulation of over 300. Mr. Morse says he has traveled about 15,000 miles, principally in Western Washington and Oregon. The Star is an eight-run weekly, and is the representative paper of that thought and progress in the territory. Mr. Morse is the perfect embodiment of energy and pluck, and his success in this field of labor is well merited.

Under the head of 'personal,' the Vancouver Independent thus mentions the advent of the editor of this paper, in that city: The opinions of the Independent are flattering as they are deserved. Through the untiring energy and enterprise of Mr. Morse, the 'Snohomish Star' has become a fitted sheet, and is steadily working its way into the good-will of the people at this as well as the adjoining States and Territories. Mr. M. is at present on a canvassing tour, and is everywhere meeting with unbounded success.

In an era before digital marketing or even reliable rail networks, local newspapers survived on the sheer physical endurance of their editors. Eldridge Morse’s 15,000-mile trek mirrors the modern hustle of small business owners who must personally network and sell their wares to survive against larger competitors—a testament to the grit required to build community institutions from scratch.
