Seattle Baseball Team Issues Call for Support

Local players aim to uphold their record against the Victoria club, but they need the community’s help to make the trip across the border.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

The Seattle Base Ball Club received yesterday a challenge from the Victoria Base Ball Club to play a match game in that city on the coming 24th of May. A meeting was held last evening, and it was resolved to accept. The boys will go into practice at once, and keep it up until the 23d, when they will go over on the steamer E. Starr. Our base ball players have a good record, and they have no present intention of allowing it to be tarnished by a defeat. They will need a little pecuniary help in this undertaking, and it is expected citizens will not be slow in extending it to them.

The practice of city pride tied to competitive sports remains a central part of Seattle identity, though today's teams are multi-million dollar industries rather than groups passing a hat to afford a boat ticket to Victoria.
