Big Industry Eyes Kennewick's Railway Triangle

A Seattle-Portland syndicate has finalized a land purchase to build a massive stockyard, signaling Kennewick’s rise as a regional livestock clearing house.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

The Seattle-Portland Union Stockyards company is now the owner of fifty acres of land in the triangle between the tracks of the Northern Pacific, the O-W. R. & N. and the S., P. & S. railroads in this city. The land has been purchased as a site for a large sales stockyard which is to be used as a clearing house for the yards in Seattle, Portland and Spokane. All doubt as to whether or not the company meant business was cleared Tuesday when it made good on its option and paid over the cash. Included in the proposed site are the farm and orchard tracts formerly owned by W. S. Haxton, E. M. Sly, P. C. Book and Frank H. Patten. Officials say they expect to have the yards ready for business this fall.

This development capture's Kennewick's early 20th-century position as a crucial agricultural rail hub. While the stockyards have long since vanished, the industrial 'triangle' defined by the historic rail lines remains a central feature of the city's commercial geography.
