Aberdeen’s Call to Action

A local editor criticizes the Chamber of Commerce for inertia and demands improvements to the Wishkah River road to boost the city's growth.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

What is the city of Aberdeen going to do to advance her interests this summer and again take an upward stride toward prosperity? While we are at present perhaps enjoying as great a degree of prosperity as any other section of the state, some concerted action must be taken looking toward the growth of the city. Thousands of people are looking toward Washington, are preparing to and are coming to the state. Do any of them know of Aberdeen and Grays harbor? No doubt some do, there is quite a number of them, however, who never heard of either place. It is true that a chamber of commerce was reorganized last winter, but nothing has been accomplished. Here is work that should be taken up. There is a road up the Wishkah river, starting at nowhere and ending nowhere, and what there is of it is but partially done. There is also a planked street leading toward it which likewise ends nowhere. Over one hundred thousand dollars of taxes have been paid into the county treasury within the last ninety days, part of which is for road purposes. This district is entitled to have that road completed now, and this city is in honor bound to extend its street the short distance that lies between the ends of each.

“There is a road up the Wishkah river, starting at nowhere and ending nowhere.”

The perennial struggle for municipal infrastructure funding and branding remains a cornerstone of Aberdeen's civic life. This 1894 complaint about a road 'starting at nowhere and ending nowhere' echoes modern debates over connectivity and the effectiveness of city planning in Grays Harbor.
