The Great Snohomish Desertion: A Husband Left Penniless by His Wife’s Flight

In a scandal that gripped the small river town in early 1877, a man returned from a logging trip to find his wife had vanished with their cash, leaving him stranded and destitute.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

On the 3rd instant, the steamer Nellie arrived from Seattle with a married couple who took rooms at the Snohomish Exchange. Here they stayed three or four days, apparently contented, when the husband concluded to ascend the river in quest of some parties with whom he had made a previous engagement to work in a logging camp until spring. Before leaving he stated that his wife would remain here until he could make suitable arrangements at the camp for her accommodation.

Soon after his departure, however, the lady becoming lonesome and restless, packed up her trunks and departed on the steamer for more congenial latitudes. The husband returned here Wednesday, and finding the condition of his domestic arrangements, was quite disconcerted. He states that his wife took with her all his cash capital—leaving him penniless—but left his wardrobe. He will embark on the outgoing steamer in search of the absconding woman.

This 1877 tale of a spouse fleeing with joint funds mirrors modern legal battles over 'financial infidelity' and the vulnerability of individuals who rely on partners for economic stability, especially in remote or transient work environments like logging camps. It highlights how gender dynamics and financial control have long been sources of domestic conflict.
