South Union Schoolhouse Lost to Forest Fires

A local schoolhouse, along with a significant portion of its contents, was consumed by wildfire spreading through the district near Aberdeen.

The South Union schoolhouse, three miles east of town, was destroyed by fire Tuesday, together with about one-third of the furniture. The fire was the result of forest fires, which have been burning in that section for the past week. The building was insured for $450 and the furniture for $150. The contract price of the building was $700.

“The fire was the result of forest fires, which have been burning in that section for the past week.”

Wildfire remains an existential threat to rural Washington infrastructure, just as it was in 1894 when the loss of a neighborhood schoolhouse meant the sudden erasure of a central community landmark.
