Lulu White Abandoned at Seattle Hotel, $330 Stolen

A Seattle elopement ends in betrayal and theft at a hotel.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

David Stewart Jr., who eloped with Mrs. Lulu White from Spokane to Seattle last May, abandoned her at the Touraine Hotel after stealing $330 from her. Stewart left a note saying he had gone to California and providing her with $20 to return to her family. Stewart was recently arraigned in Seattle and held on $1,000 bail.

“I have gone to California so don't holler. If you do you will wish you had not.”

This story of a predatory elopement and theft echoes the vulnerabilities often faced by women during the turn of the century when financial independence was limited, and legal protections were often ignored in the shadows of the hotel industry.
