Wealthy Country Club Ransacked at American Lake

Thieves made off with $300 worth of fine apparel and food, leaving the Country club management baffled.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

A miscellaneous assortment of wearing apparel and food was stolen from the clubhouse of the Country club at American Lake last Thursday night and carried away in a farm wagon. The goods taken from the clubhouse belonged to the various members of the club, and are valued roughly at $300. No clue as to the identity of the thieves has been found although the Country club management has offered a reward of $50 for the culprits. It has been the custom for a watchman to be stationed at the clubhouse nightly, but Thursday night no one was on guard. The thieves backed a wagon to the steps of the place, forced the doors open and thoroughly ransacked all of the rooms. The principal loss will be of golf clothes and boots, although the larder was well cleaned out. It will be fairly easy to identify the goods if they are sold in Tacoma or Seattle, as they belonged to the most wealthy members of the club and are of extra good quality.

American Lake remains a center for private clubs and luxury, though the notion of a farm-wagon heist targeting golf gear serves as a stark reminder of how the geography of wealth has shifted in Pierce County.
