Northern Pacific Pays Out Thousands for Point Defiance Land

A significant payout to property owners marks the resolution of land disputes for the new Northern Pacific railway route.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

Into the avenue of business in Tacoma, $140,000 will be dropped this afternoon by Deputy United States Clerk of Courts Sam Bridges, in payment to the property owners who secured verdicts against the Northern Pacific for the land taken for the Point Defiance line in the recent sitting of court. The North Shore Lumber company gets $99,400 of the amount and the rest is distributed to the Colonial company, Clarence K. Clark, the Garvey, Eltonhead and Wingate estates, Thomas J. Cannon, and the Pacific Shingle Mill company. The Northern Pacific paid the money into court after the trials ended and the clerk got an order of distribution and paid it out today.
