The Sisters of the Sacred Name Begin Their New Academy

Plans revealed for a grand four-story academy on the block bounded by Ninth, Tenth, King, and Jackson streets.

Workmen are engaged in laying the foundation of a building which when completed will be no less an architectural ornament to the city than a credit to its culture and education. We refer to the new academy of the Sisters of the Sacred Name, which is to occupy the block bounded by Ninth, Tenth, King and Jackson streets. The building will front on Ninth Street, and from its windows can be had a magnificent view of the city and the bay. The structure will be four stories in height and surmounted by a belfry and spire, the cross at the top of which will be 148 feet from the ground. The cost of the building will be about $40,000.

This site, once intended for an educational monument, was later swallowed by the massive re-grading and industrial shifts of the early 20th century. It serves as a reminder of the religious and educational institutions that helped define early Seattle before its downtown geography was fundamentally reshaped.
