Federal Relief for Richland Farmers

New government loans offer a lifeline to ranchers burdened by high-interest debt and the legacy of the old boom days.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

A great many Richland farmers have been advised during the past week that their applications for Federal loans have been approved. This will be a great boon to many of the local ranchers who are laboring under heavy odds with mortgages at a high rate of interest. Under the government plan which allows a man 36 years to pay off his principal with 5% interest, an era of prosperity may dawn on the Richland district, unlike the days when it was dangerous to walk across the street for fear of being run down by autos bringing out prospective land buyers for wild sagebrush land.

“There is no reason why an era of prosperity should not dawn on the Richland district such as it has not experienced since the old boom days.”

This reflects the ongoing cycle of rural debt and agricultural boom-bust cycles in the Tri-Cities area. The contrast between the 'old boom days' of land speculation and the government's attempt to stabilize farmers echoes contemporary debates about federal intervention in regional economies.
