Tacoma’s $375,000 Push for Infrastructure

The city prepares to tackle persistent flooding in the South End and bridge connectivity issues with a major bond initiative.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

The voters of Tacoma will, a week from tomorrow, be called upon to vote on the proposition of issuing $375,000 in bonds for bridges and sewers. The bridges are to be located on North 21st, North 23rd, Puyallup avenue, South Tacoma avenue and elsewhere as needed, taking in Yakima avenue if the fill does not entirely care for this. The bridges call for $300,000. The bonds for sewers will amount to $75,000. It is for storm sewers in the South End largely to relieve the flooded sections there which have been in bad shape the last few years.

Tacoma’s struggle with infrastructure capacity and flooding in the South End has remained a constant civic challenge for over a century. The language of 'relieving flooded sections' echoes modern discussions about urban drainage in an era of more intense rainfall.
