Republicans Sweep Council in Election

Voters approve bonds for city infrastructure as Republicans maintain a firm majority on the City Council.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

About one-third of the voters in the city participated in the election yesterday when nine councilmen were chosen and the people decided to issue $375,000 for bridges and sewers. In the council, there will be two democrats and fourteen republicans. The vote for Calvin W. Stewart, Jr., Democrat, in the Eighth Ward was an eye-opener for the politicians there; he defeated John B. King hands down. Bridge bonds for $300,000 passed 2,116 to 547, and sewer bonds for $75,000 passed 1,971 to 650.

Infrastructure bonds were as essential to Tacoma's development in 1909 as they are today. The push for city-wide sewer and bridge improvements laid the groundwork for the modern layout of the city, illustrating the long-standing civic struggle to balance growth and public debt.
