City Hall Moving into the Eakin Building

In a move to consolidate services, Kennewick's city government will relocate its offices and fire department to the corner of Second and Pacific.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

At its regular meeting Tuesday evening, the city council voted to lease the Eakin building at the corner of Second and Pacific streets. The Holland-North American Mortgage company, owners of the building, are to make such alterations as are necessary for the city’s use. The city expects to occupy the west half by December 1, providing space for the city clerk, council chambers, and the public library. Eventually, the east half will be converted into a central fire station and police headquarters, replacing the current scattered city buildings on Yakima and Front streets.

“All together, the change will mean a considerable saving to the city in rentals.”

This consolidation mirrors the perennial municipal struggle to balance rising rent costs against the need for efficient public administrative space—a concern that remains acute in rapidly growing Kennewick.
