Kennewick High School Debaters Triumph

Despite a lackluster turnout and a challenging, dry subject, the local team secured a victory in the first state debate series.

The Kennewick-Roslyn debate held last Friday night was successful from every point of view except the crowd, there being only about fifty people out to attend the contest. The Kennewick debaters, Norman Lynch, Burdette Hoadley and Stanley Randolph, showed evidence of careful preparation and their understanding of the difficult subject selected for this year's series of debates, and would have won from much stronger opposition than that afforded by the Roslyn team. It is unfortunate that the state department of education permitted the selection of a question so devoid of general interest, and considerable credit is due the local debaters and their coach, Miss Opel Bonsall.

School debate programs remain a cornerstone of regional civic life in the Tri-Cities. The complaint about low community attendance for such an academic exercise is a timeless lament from small-town boosters.
