Eight Men Arrested in South D Street Gambling Sweep

City detectives targeted a lodging house suspected of hosting illegal card games late Saturday night.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

City Detectives Wiley and Geary raided a gambling joint operated in a lodging house at 1544 South D street late Saturday night and managed to arrest eight inmates of the place. The police had been watching the place for some time, and Saturday, after several men had entered, they decided that the time was ripe for a little investigation. The men gave their names as T. E. Straus, William Jones, George Bassett, Olaf Berg, John Duffey, G. W. Bruce, Lemuel Crow and Harvey Clark. They are being tried this afternoon.

“The police had been watching the place for some time, and Saturday... they decided that the time was ripe for a little investigation.”
