Tacoma Voters Urged to Register for Charter Election
Only half of Tacoma is registered with a major charter revision election looming.
The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
Only about one-half of the qualified electors in Tacoma are registered, and the most important election in the history of the city is only about 30 days away. June 8, this city will elect a committee to revise the charter. On the personnel of this committee depends whether or not Tacoma shall have a commission plan of government, and what kind of government, no matter what the plan. The entire city charter is to be revised. Opportunity will be offered in this revision for corporations to get in their work and have such a charter created as will give them whatever they want and give the people nothing. Opportunity will be at hand for every crooked influence to secure such provisions in the charter as will make it possible to thrive and prey upon the people. The time for Tacomans to exercise that eternal vigilance which Patrick Henry declared was the price of liberty is right now. The next thirty days should see another 9,000 voters on the registration books at the city clerk's office.
“The time for Tacomans to exercise that eternal vigilance which Patrick Henry declared was the price of liberty is right now.”
Low voter turnout in local charter or special elections remains a critical hurdle for Tacoma governance, where 'eternal vigilance' is often tested by apathy.
