The Phantom Murder of Snohomish

A night of terrifying screams and gunfire leads to a frantic, futile search for a body in the river.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

A mysterious affair occurred at Snohomish City one night last week. Cries of 'Murder' and 'Help!' were heard, followed by a noise as if of a scuffle, and finally of a pistol shot. Those who heard the noise were slow in going to the spot, but a crowd finally went there with lights, but too late to discover anything. They were convinced, however, that murder had been done, and the next day dragged the river for the purpose of finding the body, but without success.

Cold cases and unexplained violence in the early settlements along the Snohomish River often left lasting local legends. The uncertainty of the 1884 event reflects the era's lack of forensic capability and the frontier reliance on communal investigation.
