Grand Jury Investigates Grocery Cartel

Tacoma grocers and commissioners face scrutiny over allegations of price-fixing and shady contracts.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

From the volume of evidence yet to be taken, it is hardly probable that the grand jury will adjourn until the middle of next week. The jurors admit that all the evidence is not in, and more than a day will be consumed in completing the report to be submitted to Judge Easterday. Several cases of equal interest were discussed by the jury today, among them being the grocery combine investigation. George B. Monty, president of the independent grocery firm of Monty, Gunn & Griswold, sat with the jury for some time today. Charles H. Grinnell, president of the Tacoma Grocery Company, was called today and was examined by the jury. The Tacoma Grocery Company has been the alleged 'ring leader' of the combine, and Grinnell was called as a result of testimony given by Thorwald J. Naerup, another independent grocer, several days ago. As a result of allegations that the board of county commissioners had given the Savage Fuel Company the contract to furnish wood to the county institutions at an exorbitant figure, Ezra P. Savage, president of the company, was called before the jury this morning, and was subjected to a searching inquiry.

“The Tacoma Grocery company has been the alleged 'ring leader' of the combine.”
