Violence Hits Walla Walla
A house of ill-repute on Alder Street is leveled by a dynamite explosion; officials suspect a gang of 'hard characters.'
WALLA WALLA, Nov. 23.—About 11 o'clock tonight the house of ill-repute at No. 57 Alder Street was completely wrecked by an explosion of dynamite, which was placed under the porch. The inmates of the house were not injured. It is believed to have been the work of a gang of hard characters who have been in town for some time.
“It is believed to have been the work of a gang of hard characters who have been in town for some time.”
This act of vigilantism against a 'house of ill-repute' reflects the rougher, often lawless frontier justice of early 1890s Washington. Dynamite was a common tool for intimidation and destruction in the era's labor and social disputes.
