Just after midnight on Thursday, a distinct earthquake rattled Snohomish, with heavier tremors felt in Northern Montana and Idaho.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

EXTRAORDINARY.—About after midnight Thursday morning a slight shock of an earthquake was distinctly felt up the Skykomish. It was lightly perceived here, murmuring the earth's mirth en route. Probably it was heavier in Northern Montana and Idaho.

The eastern railroad platform manifested themselves in repeated disturbances between the Chinese and the laboring element in San Francisco. Some damage has been done, as the vigilance committee is again organized there.

While this 1877 earthquake was a minor local event compared to modern seismic concerns, it highlights how early Washington Territory residents were acutely aware of their location on the Pacific Ring of Fire. The mention of concurrent labor unrest in San Francisco underscores that while the earth shook locally, social and political tensions were shaking the broader region simultaneously.
