The Mysterious Vanishing of $490

A cash shipment intended for Arlington disappears from the Northern Pacific Express Company's transit pipeline, leaving staff scrambling.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

A package containing $490, which was delivered to the Northern Pacific Express Company by a business man in this city on Monday for shipment to Arlington, has mysteriously disappeared. It is not believed to have been stolen, but is thought to have gone by some mischance into the wrong car and to be now on the way to Chicago. The agent explains that in the rush at the depot, the package may have stuck to the bottom of another parcel destined for the East, and is now in the through safe. They will not know for certain until the safe is opened on Friday.

“All the clerks have since been searching high and low for it, but without success.”

This incident highlights the chaotic, manual nature of logistics in the late 19th century. While we now rely on digital tracking, the anxiety over 'lost' shipments remains a familiar frustration for any city resident.
