Grim Discovery in West Seattle Woods

A hunter discovers human remains in a box, prompting a coroner's investigation.

The remains of a human being were discovered in a trunk or box at West Seattle Sunday afternoon by a young man named Herring while hunting. The sight so startled him that he forgot to be curious. The matter was reported to Coroner Horton yesterday afternoon and Deputy Coroner Frank Carroll will go across the bay this morning to investigate. The supposition at present is that some old corpse has come to light.

The discovery of remains in the then-unsettled forests of West Seattle is a haunting reminder of the city's rapid expansion. While the 'supposition' that it was an 'old corpse' suggests a somewhat casual attitude toward forensic discovery at the time, such events were common occurrences during the era of rapid development.
