The Prize-Winning Bounty of 1877

A look at the official premium list for the Snohomish County Agricultural Society, revealing the crops, livestock, and domestic crafts that defined the frontier economy of the Washington Territory.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

Within the premium list examined, amended and approved by the Trustees this 9th day of August, 1877, the Snohomish County Agricultural Society established the benchmarks for local production. Awards ranging from $1.00 to $5.00 were offered for top-tier entries across various categories. Agricultural categories included grains such as wheat, oats, and rye, alongside a massive variety of orchard fruits—specifically highlighting apples for 'size and flavor.' Domestic categories incentivized home production, including the best five-pound can of lard, barrelled corned beef, and dairy products. Women’s work was heavily represented, with prizes for everything from crochet shawls and silk embroidery to handmade lace and intricate quilt work. Livestock categories placed high value on American horses and Jersey or Ayrshire cattle, signaling the importance of breeding and animal husbandry to the young county's development. This list, codified by President J.N. Low, remains a snapshot of the intense local effort required to build a sustainable food system in the Snohomish valley.

Today's thriving Snohomish County farmers market scene is the direct descendant of the 1877 Agricultural Society. While we no longer award prizes for the best display of tobacco or barrelled salt-meat, the community's focus on local food sovereignty and regional craft remains the bedrock of the area's identity.
