The Snohomish Athenaeum’s Grand Ambition

In 1877, a group of citizens drafted an ambitious charter for a local society dedicated to 'literature, science, medicine, or law,' dreaming of a regional hub for intellectual progress.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

The Board of Trustees of the Snohomish Athenaeum, having prepared a proposed code of by-laws, submits them to the stockholders for approval. The Athenaeum aims to provide the greatest possible aid to literature and science that the means at its command will allow. The trustees shall have full control of all property and may establish professorships with a regular course of study upon the most liberal terms, so as to provide all suitable means for a thorough education in literature, science, medicine, or law. Furthermore, the society intends to offer popular lectures to the public, provide for comparative religious studies, and maintain a library and museum, ensuring that as great a number as possible of the community may enjoy these privileges. In the event that the facilities are not in use by the society, the president may let the building for other reasonable purposes to support the Athenaeum's finances.

“It shall be the duty of the Trustees to establish such professorships... so as to give and provide all suitable means for a thorough education in literature, science, medicine, or law.”

This 1877 plan for a multipurpose intellectual and community center reflects an early era of 'civic DIY' in Snohomish. Today’s debates over public library funding and community spaces mirror this century-old desire to anchor local identity in shared learning and intellectual infrastructure.
