A Bold Morning Assault

A Seattle police officer is waylaid and robbed by a highwayman in the early hours of the morning.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

At 2:45 o'clock this morning, Officer A. McMillan was held up by a man and robbed of his watch and revolver. After they had gotten through with him, they told him to keep his trap shut and beat it about his business. McMillan telephoned to police headquarters for instructions and was notified to stay on his beat until further orders from headquarters. At the time of going to press no description of the highwaymen had been obtained.

“After they had gotten through with him, they told him to keep his trap shut.”

Public safety and police-citizen interactions remain a highly scrutinized civic issue in Seattle, though the 'keep your trap shut' dialogue highlights the lawless, frontier-adjacent nature of the city's 1893 policing environment.
