The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
A musical and literary entertainment called the Columbian Drill was given in the Ballard opera house Friday night for the benefit of Berachah Baptist church. It was probably as good an entertainment as was ever given in Ballard, and its success was largely due to the efforts of Miss Alice Hamblet, who organized and arranged the programme and trained the young ladies. Miss Hamblet is a lineal descendant of Chief Seattle and has been educated as a vocalist and elocutionist. She will on the 13th start for Centralia to begin a professional tour of the state.
“Miss Hamblet is a lineal descendant of Chief Seattle and has been educated as a vocalist and elocutionist.”
This notice highlights the cultural life of Ballard when it was a distinct, independent community, and records the public presence of a direct descendant of the city’s namesake during a time when Indigenous erasure was otherwise systemic.
