A debt of $236.48 for board and lodging in 1877 would represent a significant financial burden, underscoring that housing insecurity and the transactional nature of survival were central to life in early Snohomish. Today's headlines regarding rising rents and the struggle to maintain stable housing continue to echo this historical tension between property owners and those needing basic shelter.
