The Cost of a Bed and Board

A legal dispute from 1877 highlights the precarious nature of early pioneer housing, where unpaid tabs for room and board could lead to courtroom showdowns.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

In the District Court of Snohomish County, Washington Territory, H.W. Light has filed a complaint against Daniel Leighton. The plaintiff claims that Leighton owes $236.48 for board, lodging, and various goods, wares, and merchandise furnished to him, alongside assigned accounts. The court has issued a summons requiring Leighton to answer the complaint within twenty days of service. Should he fail to appear to contest the debt, a judgment by default will be entered against him for the full amount plus legal costs and disbursements of the suit, as ordered by the Honorable Judge J.R. Lewis this 28th day of November, 1877.

“The said action is brought to recover a judgment for Two Hundred and Thirty-six dollars and forty-eight cents on the following grounds: For board and lodgings and goods, wares and merchandise furnished you.”

Long before modern property management apps or complex lease agreements, 'board and lodging' was the primary housing model for the itinerant labor force of the Pacific Northwest. This 1877 legal notice serves as a grim reminder that housing instability—and the legal consequences of being unable to pay for it—has been a constant, bruising thread in Snohomish’s local history.
