The Price of Staying Fed: A Frontier Eviction Debt

A legal summons from 1878 captures the harsh reality of pioneer life, where unpaid boarding bills for food and lodging resulted in formal court action.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

This legal notice highlights a perennial struggle: the cost of survival in a high-growth region. While modern Snohomish faces crises of rental affordability, this 1878 summons reminds us that in the frontier era, even basic food and shelter were often credit-based, leading to legal ruin when wages or harvests failed to materialize.
