The Tragedy on the Duwamish Road

A reckless driving incident near the Duwamish River leaves a mother and son severely injured.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

A singular accident occurred on the county road on the west side of the Duwamish yesterday, likely resulting in fatal injuries for the wife of Captain Jackson of Sunnydale. The woman and her son were in a dog cart when they attempted to pass a wood wagon driven by David Mutchler of South Park. The boy, driving the cart, allowed the hub to scrape Mutchler's team, frightening the horses. The runaway team demolished the cart and trampled the occupants. Mrs. Jackson was knocked insensible, having been kicked by a horse, and her son suffered a severe leg injury. Both were attended to by Dr. Moore at South Park.

“The boy undertook to pass the wagon and did so, but carelessly allowed the hub of the cart to rub against one of Mutchler's horses.”

This incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of travel in rural King County before paved roads and modern traffic regulation. It illustrates the vulnerability of early settlers to industrial and carriage accidents in the developing outskirts of the city.
