The City's June Fire Toll

From false alarms to tragedy, the Seattle Fire Department details a month of small blazes.

Chief Hunt, of the fire department, completed his summary of June fires yesterday. Ten alarms were sent in, but in no case did the damage go above $50. On June 22, an alarm at 9:30 p.m. for a fire in Rainier school, caused by an overturned lamp, resulted in no loss to the building, but Miss Amanda Hildebrandt was fatally burned.

This summary of minor commercial and residential fires highlights the constant threat of fire in a rapidly building wooden city. The tragic death of Amanda Hildebrandt illustrates how precarious safety was in early schools and workplaces before modern fire codes.
