Seattle Congratulates Tacoma, in Incandescent Lights
Seattle's women, manufacturers and artists prepare a showy welcome for Tacoma fair visitors, complete with a glowing sign, exhibits and a dedicated march.
SEATTLE, Sept. 11.—Special. Tomorrow will indeed be a very pleasant day for the visitors. A committee of Tacoma women will receive them and see to it that they are all escorted to the points of interest. The women's reception committee will form in a semi-circle at the main entrance, just in front of the POST-INTELLIGENCER headquarters, and they will make it a point to see that every Seattle woman is individually taken in hand and conducted wherever she cares to go. There will be no set programme for entertaining the visitors, because it is considered more desirable to allow the guests of the occasion to go where they please without restraints or to be required to carry out any programme. One thing, however, Mrs. Hiaughter wishes the visitors to bear in mind, and that is that there will be a meeting of the women in the art gallery at 4 p.m. sharp to talk over ways and means of making the women's congress one of the most valuable meetings to be held at the fair. An expression of opinion is desired on this subject, and as there will be representatives of the various branches of the congress at the fair tomorrow, it is proposed to utilize their presence by having a general meeting. The names of the Tacoma reception committee will be registered at the POST-INTELLIGENCER headquarters, and it is desired that the names of the visitors appear on record there also. As many of the visitors as can find it convenient to do so are requested to register. In the evening there will be fireworks, and the pioneer day exercises will also take place during the day. 'Seattle congratulates Tacoma' in letters of incandescent lights are the words that meet your eyes as you enter the main hall of the principal building. There are 19 sixteen-candle lights in the words 'Seattle' and 'Tacoma,' and 150 small globes in the word 'congratulates.' The Seattle committee has made an elaborate display and has covered a space spanning the main arch adjoining the POST-INTELLIGENCER's Tacoma headquarters which juts into the section assigned Seattle. Director General Lucey and his assistant, Mr. German, have been spreading bunting by the bolt all day, and are arranging to give the Pioneers and Seattleites a hearty welcome. Prof. Olof Hull has prepared a special musical programme and has written a march which has been dedicated to the Seattle ladies. The Seattle committee has been represented here by Messrs. Bagley and Kutter, who have been assisted by Percy W. Rochester, while Jessie M. Elliott has had charge of the departments of art and women's work. All of the Seattle exhibits are not in place; a creditable display has been made, however. After registering at the POST-INTELLIGENCER as headquarters you come upon the Seattle section. Mr. C. C. Berg, of Tacoma, has furnished a handsome case and elk, which flank the main aisle on the other side. He has also an extensive exhibit of taxidermy. Mark Ten Sing has a complete exhibit of Chinese and Japanese goods. Among the Seattle exhibits were the San Francisco Shoe Company, the Washington Shoe Company, the Graham Millinery Company, the City Shirt Company, the Pacific Aluminum Company, the Denny Clay Company, the Seattle Coal and Iron Company, the Eureka Coal Company, the Pacific Lounge and Mattress Company, and Leschi Park, represented by its black swan and sea lions. One of the pretty features of the Seattle exhibit is the 'Goddesses of Grain and Agriculture,' furnished by a Seattle artist. The women's work department is materially benefited by the work of Mrs. Foote, C. H. Richmond, Mrs. O. L. Hill, Mrs. Likeman, Mrs. J. W. Pratt, and Miss Bessie Beach. Mrs. C. H. Richmond has on exhibition an inlaid table made of sixty varieties of wood. The Washington Natural University has an extensive assortment of Indian curios, where 'Chief Seattle' is a striking figure, and the public schools will have their exhibit within a few days. The Portland exhibit was installed today, and although it is not expected to be altogether ready by tomorrow, enough is shown to give an idea of the space which Oregon will fill. The four largest and fastest Seattle yachts will start early tomorrow evening for Tacoma, carrying parties from Seattle. It has been decided to make September 24 Puyallup Day, and an effort is being made to get representatives from every county in the Northwest in the street procession on that day.
“'Seattle congratulates Tacoma' in letters of incandescent lights are the words that meet your eyes as you enter the main hall of the principal building.”
Civic boosterism—cities courting visitors and bragging about local manufacturers—still shapes regional politics. The illuminated 'Seattle congratulates Tacoma' sign is an early example of the friendly rivalry that now plays out in sports, tech and transportation.
