Olympia’s Lincoln Club Rallies for State Convention
Local boosters organize a mass delegation to Seattle to lobby for hosting the fall state convention in Olympia.
The Lincoln club of Olympia is about to make arrangements to go to Seattle on the 14th of next month in a body to make a determined fight for the fall state convention to be held in this city. Committeeman Thos. H. Cavanaugh from Thurston county, who made a fight for Olympia at the last meeting of the committee, says it will take good work to get the convention to come to Olympia. There is nothing like a strong delegation to help in this matter, and if the Lincoln club will go in a body and act as an escort to the strong delegation selected by the county convention last Saturday, it may be the means of Olympia winning. In the meantime, funds are wanted to guarantee the necessary expenses of the convention. The Tribune will subscribe $200 and the Olympian has announced that it will give $100. Who’s next?
“There is nothing like a strong delegation to help in this matter and if the Lincoln club will go in a body... it may be the means of Olympia winning.”
The practice of local clubs and newspapers pooling funds to 'buy' or lobby for regional conventions remains a staple of civic boosterism in Olympia today. While the Lincoln Club is a relic of the 19th-century political machine, the competitive nature of securing state-level events for the capital city persists.
