The Pioneer Hub for Snohomish's Rising Professionals

Before the age of online degrees, Snohomish’s ambitious youth crowded into the Puget Sound Business College to master telegraphy, mercantile law, and the ledger.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

The Puget Sound Business College stands as the leading commercial institution on the Pacific Coast, offering thorough and practical instruction. It serves as a vital link between the institution and the merchant community, where it turns the inexperienced student into a complete, practically trained person ready for honor and profit. The Business Course is by far more thorough and extensive than that of any other business college on the coast. It embraces branches such as Bookkeeping, Commercial Arithmetic, Penmanship, Commercial Law, and Banking. The Banking Department is united with the counting-room upon a plan that gives the student all the practical advantages of a real institution, including drafts, checks, notes, currency, and commercial paper. The student buys, sells, ships, barters, draws, executes, and pays notes, and in every way manages the entire course of business as it is regulated in the active world.

This text provides a rare look at the era’s vocational training, mirroring modern debates about the efficacy of college versus trade-focused practical education. While we now rely on digital interfaces, the fundamental desire for credentials to secure entry into the 'merchant community' remains a fixture of the Snohomish economy.
