The City That Vanished: Seattle’s First Real Estate Bubble and the Ghosts of Terry’s Addition

A look back at January 1890, when Seattle’s land boom was in full swing, prices were soaring, and developers like George Dorffel were selling lots in new subdivisions to speculators eager for a quick profit.

This ledger from January 1890 captures Seattle at the height of its first major land boom, just before the panic of 1893 would crash the market. The frequent sales in 'Terry's Addition' and 'Denny Park' highlight how rapidly the city was expanding outward from its original core, a pattern of speculative development that echoes in today's discussions about housing affordability and gentrification in neighborhoods like Capitol Hill and Queen Anne.
