A Sheepman Vanishes on the Way Home

A Klickitat County rancher carrying a large sum of cash disappears while attempting to return to Scotland, sparking fears of foul play.

Some weeks ago Douglas McAllister, a sheepman, started back from Klickitat county for his old home in Scotland. As no word has been received from him and as he had over a thousand dollars with him, it is feared he may have fallen among thieves. Recently John McAllister received a letter from his mother stating that Doug hadn't arrived there yet.

“As no word has been received from him and as he had over a thousand dollars with him, it is feared he may have fallen among thieves.”

The vulnerability of itinerant workers carrying large amounts of cash was a common danger in the late 19th-century West. Today, while digital banking has mitigated the risk of highway robbery, the anxiety of a family waiting for word from a loved one remains a timeless human tragedy.
