A Farmers’ Paper Warns: Don’t Ship to This Commission Firm

Ranch and Range says the Washington Fruit and Produce Union left Tacoma accounts unsettled and is now trying to do business in Seattle.

The Washington Fruit and Produce Union, which last year ran at Tacoma and left many of its accounts unsettled, is now attempting to do business in Seattle. We venture to say that the company will not find very many farmers in the state—subscribers to this paper—who will be willing to ship their goods to them, and as our paper reaches about all the progressive producers, it is not likely that the extent of the business they do will reach very large proportions. We suggest that our readers notify their neighbors that this company is a crooked one and thus insure them against any possible loss.

Commission merchants stood between farmers and distant markets, and a firm that failed or fled could wipe out a season’s income. The trade-paper warning network here anticipates modern fraud alerts and the recurring problem of producers carrying the risk when middlemen disappear.
