The State Fair Theft Spree

While visitors networked and traded livestock at the Yakima State Fair, a brazen thief targeted the sleeping quarters of prominent attendees.

Somebody stole the $15 overcoat of E. E. James, the manager of the Jersey Creamery. A still more heinous crime was that committed against J. A. Woll, secretary of the State Dairymen's Association, when someone 'swiped' the blankets, sheets and pillows from his bed. Had he remained away from his room a little longer, his couch also would doubtless have disappeared.

The Central Washington State Fair remains a cornerstone of Yakima life, though modern security has largely replaced the era of 'swiping' bedding from hotel rooms. The incident highlights the vulnerability of travelers during large-scale public events, a perennial issue for city planners and event organizers.
