He Came to Stop a Beating and Never Went Home
George Lust went to the Bafus place near Wilcox to shield his sister from her husband. Bafus met him with a stick of wood — and now faces a murder charge.
COLFAX — A warrant has been issued for George Bafus, charging him with murder in the first degree, for the death of George Lust on April 16. Lust entered the Bafus home, near Wilcox, to prevent Bafus from beating his wife, who was the sister of Lust. Bafus struck Lust in the head with a stick of wood and killed him. He was bound over to the Superior Court for further investigation by the Coroner's Jury. Bafus has been out on $8,000 bail.
“Lust entered the Bafus home, near Wilcox, to prevent Bafus from beating his wife, who was the sister of Lust.”
More than a century before domestic violence had a name or a shelter movement, this rural case records a brother's fatal attempt to protect his sister from her husband. The $8,000 bond and coroner's inquest show a justice system still improvising its response to violence inside the home.
