Burglars Ransack Banquet Hotel, Steal Jewelry and Razor

A thief made off with a gold watch, chains, a cameo ring, and a safety razor from the Banquet Hotel on Monday evening, and police suspect a woman known to them may be involved.

Burglars went through the Banquet hotel rooms on Monday evening. They secured a lady's gold watch and chain, the property of Mrs. Rice, two chains belonging to M. Rice and a neck chain belonging to their daughter. The robbers took a cameo ring and a safety razor belonging to Mr. Rice also.

It is thought that the miscreant was the same person who called at the hotel during the afternoon and sold a phony ring to the wife of the proprietor. It is also thought that a person who has been figuring in police circles recently may have had a hand in the haul, as she was known to have been in the hotel during the day.

Hotels were once prime targets for thieves, much like today’s travelers worry about security. This 1909 break-in in Newport shows that even small-town hotels had to guard against con artists and burglars, and the suspicion falling on a woman known to police hints at a local underworld.
