Newport's 1909 Boom: New Additions, Orchards and Fifteen Houses at Once
Real-estate agents opened fresh tracts on the edge of town while a land company put thirty men and ten teams to work clearing apple orchards.
Real estate activity continues and there are numerous transfers of lots and buildings, while many prospective purchasers are investigating the desirability of various building sites. That the present year will make a new record in building for Newport is already evident.
This week two new additions to the town are placed on the market. The first part of what is known as the Bradley tract, adjoining the town on the northwest, has been platted and was opened to buyers today. It consists of four acres nearest town and is laid out in good sized building lots with wide streets. Charles F. Craig will handle it and it is known as Blackwell's addition.
The Newport Washington Land Co. makes its first offering of the new addition to Cedar Park in lots and acre tracts. They have met with good success in the sale of Cedar Park, and attractive homes have been built on the property sold last year. The new addition is being handled by A. M. Harris, sales agent for the company.
Ernest Thompson is preparing to plat several acres of his homestead across the river, adjoining the Fidelity property and will soon place it on the market. He will call his townsite East Newport.
The Newport Washington Land Co. is starting a camp to continue the development of Silver Birch orchard tracts. A force of thirty men and ten teams will start work tomorrow clearing more land and setting to winter apples the land cleared last year. Five thousand winter apple trees of the varieties best adapted to this section will be set out this spring, and the work of clearing more land will be continued all summer. The company is disposing of all the orchard land they can get ready for market, and could have sold more last year had they been able to prepare it.
In clearing the land they are using a thirty horse power donkey engine, and have also purchased a new gasoline stump burning outfit, which will arrive this week. The work of the company in demonstrating what can be done on the cut-over lands is of inestimable value to this section.
Work will be resumed on the new concrete hotel building to be constructed by Messrs. Craig & Martin in a short time. Material is now being delivered on the ground for the building.
Jones & Son resumed work on the Craig concrete block building, located just north of The Miner office on Wednesday.
Robert Yeach started the construction of a $1000 home in Scott's addition this week.
At the present time there are about 15 dwellings in process of erection in Newport, and the prospects are that as many more will be started within the next two weeks.
E. E. Reid is having a large warehouse building constructed in the rear of his building for the use of Bell Turnbull, his tenants.
Work on the new Catholic church is progressing satisfactorily. The roof is on.
“That the present year will make a new record in building for Newport is already evident.”
Newport's growth in 1909 was sold lot by lot, with new additions and orchard tracts promoted as surely as subdivisions are marketed today. The same tension—how fast a small town should grow and who gets to build—remains familiar along the Pend Oreille.
