A Sawmill Manager Killed by a Runaway Log

C. F. Jones, manager of the Chehalis Lumber Company mill at Littell, was crushed at the log pond while helping unload a carload.

Chehalis.—C. F. Jones, manager of the Chehalis Lumber Company's sawmill at Littell, four miles west of Chehalis, was instantly killed by being crushed by a log. Mr. Jones was helping the loggers unload a carload of logs at the rollway at the pond when the accident occurred. The logs got away and rolled over Jones, crushing his skull and inflicting other injuries that would have been fatal.

Logging and sawmills were among the most dangerous workplaces in early twentieth-century Washington, and sudden deaths like Jones's were a routine risk of the timber economy. The state's timber industry still carries serious injury hazards, and the story remains a reminder of the human cost behind the region's lumber wealth.
