Miners Draw a Line Against the Railroad

Claim owners in the Marshall Lake mining district will fight Northern Pacific's patent application at a Nov. 8 hearing.

Owners of mining claims in the Marshall Lake mining districts are preparing to contest the application of the Northern Pacific Railway Co. for a patent on the south half of the southeast quarter of Section 15, Township 32, Range 45. Work has been done on claims on this land for many years, and the men doing the work do not propose to let the railroad company grab it without a contest. The hearing will be held before U.S. Commissioner Rogers on Nov. 8.

The dispute is an old Western version of a still-live question: when corporate title collides with long use, who really owns the ground? The miners' language about a railroad 'grab' could be lifted from a modern land-rights fight.
