A Forest Fire at Tiger Burns 700,000 Feet of Logs and Two Homes

The Panhandle Lumber Company loses a vast pile of cut logs along the track, and two families — including Mrs. Parker and her daughters — watch their homes burn.

A forest fire in the neighborhood of Tiger caused considerable damage Saturday and Sunday, the Panhandle Lumber Company being the largest loser. The company lost 700,000 feet of logs which had been cut from the Underwood place and piled along the track. Considerable standing timber and cordwood were also destroyed. A house belonging to J. W. Wooding was burned, also the home of Jas. Parker. Mrs. Parker and daughters were unable to save most of the contents of their home.

The Panhandle Co. and the I. W. N. had about fifty each at work fighting the flames on Sunday and as many residents of that section were out to assist in the fight. The total loss caused by the fire was in the neighborhood of $10,000.

“Mrs. Parker and daughters were unable to save most of the contents of their home.”

Tiger, Washington is now a near-ghost of a place in Pend Oreille County, and the timber economy that fed it has largely moved on. But the pattern — a dry-season fire swallowing cut timber and family homes while neighbors and crews scramble to fight it — is one the region still lives with every August.
